Research Child Care Centers That Offer An Afterschool Program

Lillian Price

If your elementary-aged child will require care this fall, search for a center that provides supervision, learning opportunities, and a nurturing environment. Your youngster will be supplied with the support that will help them perform well in school and will have plenty of time to make friends with other children with similar interests.

Ages Accepted, Location, And Transportation

Review some child care centers that are located within your county. Each center will accept children who fall into a specific age range. Some centers may accommodate infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-aged children and provide separate areas within a center for each grouping of babies and children.

Upon compiling a list of centers that accept children who are the same age as your child, find out how close the centers are to the school. If your child is going to be riding a bus to and from school, you will need to notify the school's transport department upon enrolling your child in a particular center.

Provide the transport department manager with the name of the center, contact information for the director, and emergency contact information for you. If your child happens to miss the bus, the transport department manager can contact the center director and you. Accommodations can be made to have your child transported directly to the center each day, and you will only be responsible for picking up your child and providing transportation to your home.

Services

Learn about the services that a center offers. The size of each classroom, the child-caregiver ratio, the amount of time that will be dedicated to learning and playing, and whether or not there is adequate space for your child to play outdoors are details to explore further.

Ask the director of a center some questions about whether your child will be able to complete homework while they are at the center or if they will be given a structured schedule that will be indicative of which activities that they will participate in each day. Some afterschool programs may include watching movies, participating in outings, or competing in team sports.

The more diverse a program is, the more likely it is your child will find some activities that they truly enjoy and look forward to participating in each day. Before you fully commit to sending your child to a particular center, request their input. Bring your child with you on a tour of the facility and ask them how they perceived the facility, once the tour has concluded.
